Brockenhurst College student Chloe Elliot has been Highly Commended by the Royal Geographical Society for an essay she produced for their David W. Smith Memorial Prize competition.

The David W. Smith Memorial Prize, supported by Routledge Publishers, invites A2 level students in England and Wales, and Advanced Higher students in Scotland, to write an essay up to 1500 words on a different topic each year. This year, entrants produced an essay that discussed the view that hunger and malnutrition are often common amongst the poor in developing countries, even when food is relatively abundant.

Chloe, who studies A levels in Geography, English Literature, Economics and Psychology, was jointly awarded her position in the competition alongside a student from Eton College. She said: "I heard about the essay competition through my geography teacher as it related to the 'sustainable cities' unit we were studying at the time.  I was really pleased, and surprised, to be 'highly commended', but I feel very proud as I did do a lot of background research on the title. I'm now planning on studying Geography at university once I finish my A levels."
