Melanie Edwards, an Adult Learner at Brockenhurst College, has been awarded a bursary by the Helena Kennedy Foundation that will enable her to continue her education, after overcoming truly difficult circumstances.
The Helena Kennedy Foundation exists to overcome social injustice by providing financial bursaries, mentoring and support to disadvantaged students from the Further and Adult Education sectors, enabling them to complete their studies in higher education and move on successfully into employment.
Shahida Aslam of the Helena Kennedy Foundation said: “This year, Trustees were overwhelmed with applications for the bursaries available and it was exceedingly difficult to make choices. Trustees recognised Melanie’s difficult circumstances and were moved and inspired by the commitment and dedication she has shown in continuing her education. Trustees also appreciate the tremendous support that Brockenhurst College has given to Melanie.”
Melanie successfully completed an Access to Higher Education Course covering maths, biology, chemistry and psychology at Brock. Having applied for the Helena Kennedy Foundation award, as encouraged to do so by her tutor Ceri Werren, Melanie will now be making excellent use of this qualification by going on to study nursing at the University of Southampton.
Speaking of her award Melanie said: “Enrolling at College wasn't easy for me as at the time I suffered from a severe anxiety disorder. However, Brockenhurst has since changed my life for the better. The tutors were amazing and so supportive. I had access to the Reflection Room and I always had people to talk to. I achieved 60 out of a possible 60 distinctions and am starting university in September. Words will never express how grateful I am to everyone at Brock, they have changed my life, and a special mention has to go to Ceri Werren and Corinne Williams for their personal support.”
