Taking time out of her busy schedule as Marketing Business Development Manager at Beaulieu Enterprises, Brockenhurst College alum Claire Smale visited the College this week to talk to Level 3 BTEC Business students about pursuing a career in marketing.

Claire studied A Levels in Business, English and Media at Brockenhurst 15 years ago, and after leaving the College as a student in 1996, returned to work for the College as a Marketing Officer.  Since then, Claire has continued to develop a successful and exciting career, working in high-profile marketing roles with well-known organisations including West Quay Shopping Centre and Tourism South East, before taking her current position with Beaulieu National Motor Museum.

As well as speaking about her working life, Claire also advised students on the educational routes they could choose to prepare for a career in marketing, starting at Brockenhurst College. Speaking about her experience as a student here, she said: “I found my time at Brockenhurst invaluable. The advice and guidance I received in terms of choosing the right degree course to pursue my chosen career was instrumental in my decision making process. I found the staff to be supportive and they would go out of their way to help where possible. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Brockenhurst and made some great friends. In fact I enjoyed it so much there that I ended up returning as a member of staff!”

Staff at Brambridge Garden Centre in Eastleigh are celebrating their success in passing their Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships. The Apprenticeship courses were delivered by Brockenhurst College and staff were able to undertake their studies alongside their jobs at the Garden Centre.

Brockenhurst’s Hospitality staff, Allan Collier and Carol Allen, worked closely with the ten restaurant employees at the Garden Centre for over a year, supporting their development and enabling them to achieve their NVQ Diplomas and Key Skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

Brambridge Restaurant Manager, Marianna Lee said that she was very pleased with the way that the Brockenhurst College team discussed the individual needs of each member of staff and monitored their progress through weekly visits. She hopes to continue the working relationship that Brambridge Garden Centre has now built with the College to ensure that all future staff can benefit from additional study and qualifications and the expertise of Brockenhurst specialist staff.

Staff members Jennifer Cree, Mark Hendy, Lukasz Piwowarski, Jennifer Rice-Benham, Kerry Davey, Tomasz Dziuraweil, Joshua Mandair, Emma Ashman, all spoke of how the Apprenticeship has helped them in their roles and has encouraged them to continue to learn more and gain new qualifications.

As the Lunar calendar turned to The Year of the Snake on Sunday, Brockenhurst College celebrated in style and looked forward to the year ahead.
Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the longest and most important celebration in the Lunar calendar, which is shared by most countries in South Asia such as China, Vietnam and Singapore. The Spring Festival celebrates the start of new life and the season of ploughing and sowing.

Brockenhurst College immersed itself in the New Year spirit, with students and staff having the opportunity to try traditional crafts such as calligraphy and origami, have a game of Majong and sample authentic Chinese food and tea.

The festivities were highlighted with an impressive show by the South Bank Dance Troup, who performed traditional martial art and folk dances.

Li Xing, Chinese Lecturer and Confucius Classroom Manager at the College said: “The celebration has been a fantastic way to share this cultural experience – we have over 100 Asian students studying at Brock and they really connect with the familiarity of the festivities. It is also a great way for all students to learn about the traditions, customs and stories linked to Chinese culture.”

Brockenhurst College students to celebrate Centenary with Channel Swim

A team of Brockenhurst College students is set to celebrate the College’s Centenary year by taking on the challenge of a Channel Swim and raising money for an established charity.

The 22-mile relay will take place in August - six plucky students will swim from Dover to Calais in a target time of 14 hours. They will take it in turn to swim, supported by a dedicated team boat throughout the crossing.

The group, who have named themselves Aspire Team Brock, will become the first College team to complete this challenge. Training is already underway with a rigorous schedule in all weathers to ensure they are fit and ready. In addition, each student has to raise £1,500 and they are all working hard to reach this target – as well as securing pledges from friends and family, they are holding various fundraising events in the coming weeks to bring in the necessary money. Anyone wishing to donate can visit www.justgiving.com/TeamBrock

The monies raised will support the renowned Aspire charity, which provides practical support to the 40,000 people with a spinal cord injury in the UK, helping them to lead fulfilled and independent lives. The charity, established in 1982 has been organising annual Channel Swims since 2009 and sees a variety of teams from across the UK participate each year.

The initial team of eight students has been named as: Libby Pardoe, Isobel Pope, Hannah Stevenson, Rose Wright, Simon Price, Ali Rogers, Cianan Mann and Adam Gough. They are all keen athletes but none has attempted anything like this before. However, Libby Pardoe has already achieved success in a swimming initiative undertaken last year.

Libby was a finalist in The Sun’s Millie’s Awards for swimming in support of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.  She successfully swam a total of 268 miles, one for each day the Regiment spent in Afghanistan, raising money for soldiers’ medical treatment.

Libby says of her latest challenge: “I want to do the Channel swim for three reasons: to raise money for Aspire to help people who have sustained spinal injury; to achieve my personal ambition to swim the Channel; and to share the experience with my College friends to achieve something that has never been done before.”

Fundraising and Marketing Director at Aspire, Paul Parrish said: “We are delighted that the students of Brockenhurst College are taking on this iconic challenge to raise much needed funds.  Swimming the Channel is a huge undertaking for anyone and these teenagers are tremendous role models to everyone at the College and within the local community. All of us at Aspire wish them the very best of luck and will spend the money they raise wisely, helping people with spinal cord injury lead independent lives.  I hope the public will generously support their bravery and dedication.”

Principal of Brockenhurst College, Di Roberts said: “This challenge shows immense dedication and courage from our students and is an excellent way to start our Centenary celebrations. The College will be cheering them with every stroke they make and with every pound they raise for charity. They are truly great ambassadors and I will be tremendously proud as we see them off from Dover in August. I am also so very grateful to the staff and parents who are supporting them in this once-in-a-life-time adventure.”

Over 70 universities from across the country attended Brockenhurst College’s Higher Education Fair today.

The event gave current Sixth Form students the opportunity to talk informally to staff and student ambassadors and find out about the course options, facilities and lifestyles on offer at different institutions. The Fair is an important event for first year students as they start making choices about the route they would like to take once they finish College.

“It’s been really helpful to have such a range of different universities in one place,” said A level student Tom Weeks. “I’m interested in doing Paramedic Science at University and I’ve picked up prospectuses from several universities that offer this course, so it’s a great way to start researching what my options are.”

Brockenhurst College also had a stand at the event, promoting the range of HND and Foundation Arts Diplomas on offer.

Leading geologist Professor Iain Stewart meets budding geoscientists at Brockenhurst College

The renowned geologist and broadcaster Professor Iain Stewart delivered a topical lecture to an audience of over 300 Sixth Form students as part of Brockenhurst College’s Geosciences Day on Monday 11th March.

Iain Stewart, who is Professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University, has worked on many television and radio programmes including Journeys from the Centre of the Earth, Hot Rocks and the Horizon and Rough Science series.

He presented a lecture to Brock students entitled ‘Un-natural hazards; the cultural geology of risk?’ which explored the way in which natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes become ‘disasters’ when, as a consequence, they adversely affect humans and society.

He discussed how, despite natural hazards often being predictable and reoccurring events within particular regions, knowledge of this does not stop people from continuing to inhabit identified ‘high-risk’ areas. He attributed this to societal factors and trends, or needs, in human behaviour – a desire to live in a beach front location, or in a fertile farming area, for example – outweighing the level of risk involved in inhabiting a certain place. He explained how an interdisciplinary approach to natural hazards, one that connects both science with sociology, is needed in order to facilitate change in the future and attempt to limit the amount of destruction to human life that natural hazards can enforce.

"We are delighted that such a well-known scientist has agreed to share his research and experience with students and staff," says Mike Farrington, Head of Geology at Brock and organiser of the event. "Professor Stewart’s lecture provided a fascinating insight for students studying in this area.”

Professor Stewart says of his visit to the College: “The enthusiasm shown by the students at Brock is inspiring, especially their sense of responsibility about the future of the planet and why the geosciences are so important in order to provide solutions. Geology is a subject that is really nurtured at Brock, and that’s why I’m here – to support this and enthuse students to continue to study it. The issues facing natural hazard management are very complex and interdisciplinary, and we need the best people to train in the Earth Sciences to make an impact and change for the future.”

As well as having the opportunity to hear from a leading research expert, Brock’s Geoscience Day also enabled students from local schools to try out various geoscience-related activities and hear from industry experts about the range of exciting careers available within the field.

Current second year student and Geology student Emily Gola was a student ambassador during the day. She said: “It is important to show school pupils the importance of what we do as geologists and to encourage an interest in the subject; I’ve really enjoyed talking about what they could learn if they study geology at A level.”

Holly Dibben, an ex-Brock student now studying Applied Geology at Plymouth University, also attended the event to provide advice to current students about making the transition from College to University, and what it is like to study a Geoscience at degree level. She said: “There is potential for geologists to earn sizable salaries, and travel and work abroad, so it really is a rewarding career path. Although there is a stereotype that Geology is a more ‘masculine’ science, many of the leading employers are now looking to encourage equal numbers, so there is particular opportunity for girls over the next few years to progress in the industry.”

A branch of the Children’s University is coming to Southampton and the New Forest thanks to a partnership between Brockenhurst College, Southampton Solent University, and local schools Hounsdown School and Blackfield Primary & Fawley Infant Federated Schools.

The Children’s University (CU) is a nationwide programme that aims to engage, inspire, and motivate children from disadvantaged backgrounds or those from families who might otherwise not think of further or higher education as an option.

In partnership with local schools, who join up voluntarily, the CU encourages children aged from 7 to 14 years (and 5 and 6 year olds with their families) to develop a passion for learning by offering them an exciting range of extra-curricular activities and events. These range from after-school or holiday activities offered on school sites to visits to museums, businesses, exhibitions, sports activities and university lectures.

After completing 30, 65 or 100 hours of activity they then achieve bronze, silver or gold certificates, with CU postgraduate and doctorate levels awarded above these hours.
All children taking part in the scheme attend an annual graduation ceremony, complete with mortar boards and gowns, where family and friends can celebrate their success.

Di Roberts, Principal of Brockenhurst College said the partnership will respond to the needs of the local community in the New Forest and Southampton.
“We look forward to providing the opportunity for children and young people to enrich their educational experience and become proud and confident learners,” she said.

As well as benefiting local children, current Solent University and Brockenhurst College students will gain valuable work experience through helping to run CU-accredited activities such as sports sessions, taster days, filming and music workshops, engineering exploration days and CU graduation ceremonies.

“The Children’s University will help us to engage with younger children in addition to providing our students with rewarding opportunities for work experience,” says Southampton Solent University’s Partnerships Development Manager Jamie Mackay.

Brockenhurst College’s Retail Skills Shop is celebrating after being selected as an NIACE Adult Learners’ Week South East Learning Project Award winner.

The Award is in recognition of the Retail Skills Shop’s provision of high quality retail training to unemployed adults in Hampshire, in order to prepare them for employment in the sector.

The project, set up in April 2011 as a partnership between Brockenhurst College, Southampton City Council, Job Centre Plus and The National Skills Academy for Retail, aims to tackle growing employment levels and the need for trained retail staff. Working with local retailers and major recruiters to ensure adults are trained to the standards they require, the Retail Skills Shop also delivers bespoke training packages to meet retailers’ specific recruitment needs.

1278 learners have trained with the Retail Skills Shop over the past two years, with 40% securing employment as a direct result and many others being inspired to progress with further training.

Emma Barratt, the Skills Shop’s Development Manager said: “The high-success rate of the initiative attracts a range of learners who would otherwise be reluctant to return to learning. We ran a recent training programme with a local General Hospital and recruited all the learners who applied, including a significant number of older applicants who have previously struggled to find employment.”

The Brockenhurst team will be presented with the Award on 21st May during a ceremony at the Museum of London, which will mark this year’s Adult Learners’ Week. Held each May, Adult Learners’ Week is an annual National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) campaign which encourages thousands of adults to give learning a go, whether for pleasure, to catch up on skills missed out at school or for career advancement.

Brockenhurst College Principal, Di Roberts said: “To receive recognition for the hard work undertaken by all partners involved in the Retail Skills Shop’s success is a wonderful achievement. Training schemes such as this make a real difference to individuals, the local community and businesses, and Adult Learners’ Week is a great opportunity for this to be recognised and used to inspire others as to the benefits of lifelong learning.”

Brock students exhibit work at National Motor Museum

An exhibition of student work from the Visual Arts Department at Brockenhurst College is now on temporary display in the National Motor Museum. Using the theme of ‘Days Out’, the students have created their own modern interpretation of posters in the Shell Art Collection.

Posters are characteristic of Shell’s advertising during the 1920s and 1930s.  Young talented artists were commissioned to convey simple messages for Shell's poster advertising.  Many of these artists went on to become famous names in 20th century British art.

In 1925 Shell began a series of posters featuring the slogan ‘See Britain First – On Shell’.  The campaign encouraged the nation to explore the British countryside in their cars using Shell petrol.  The posters showed romantic landscapes with traffic free roads.  Shell tapped into the longing for a rural escape from the city and reassured motorists of the reliability of their products with the strap line ‘You can be sure of Shell’.

Shell continued the campaign to promote motor tourism throughout the British Isles with press advertising, TV advertising and the popular Shell Guide series until the mid 1980s.

This exhibition is the result of a Heritage100 partnership project between Brockenhurst College, National Motor Museum and Hampshire County Council, with the support from the Arts Council England and Shell Brands International AG.

Prizes were awarded to the following students:
  • Nat Henshaw & Harry Thorpe
  • Collette Parker & Melissa Ellis
  • Lyndsay Boxell
