Leading geologist Professor Iain Stewart meets budding geoscientists at Brockenhurst College
The renowned geologist and broadcaster Professor Iain Stewart delivered a topical lecture to an audience of over 300 Sixth Form students as part of Brockenhurst College’s Geosciences Day on Monday 11th March.
Iain Stewart, who is Professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University, has worked on many television and radio programmes including Journeys from the Centre of the Earth, Hot Rocks and the Horizon and Rough Science series.
He presented a lecture to Brock students entitled ‘Un-natural hazards; the cultural geology of risk?’ which explored the way in which natural phenomena such as earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes become ‘disasters’ when, as a consequence, they adversely affect humans and society.
He discussed how, despite natural hazards often being predictable and reoccurring events within particular regions, knowledge of this does not stop people from continuing to inhabit identified ‘high-risk’ areas. He attributed this to societal factors and trends, or needs, in human behaviour – a desire to live in a beach front location, or in a fertile farming area, for example – outweighing the level of risk involved in inhabiting a certain place. He explained how an interdisciplinary approach to natural hazards, one that connects both science with sociology, is needed in order to facilitate change in the future and attempt to limit the amount of destruction to human life that natural hazards can enforce.
"We are delighted that such a well-known scientist has agreed to share his research and experience with students and staff," says Mike Farrington, Head of Geology at Brock and organiser of the event. "Professor Stewart’s lecture provided a fascinating insight for students studying in this area.”
Professor Stewart says of his visit to the College: “The enthusiasm shown by the students at Brock is inspiring, especially their sense of responsibility about the future of the planet and why the geosciences are so important in order to provide solutions. Geology is a subject that is really nurtured at Brock, and that’s why I’m here – to support this and enthuse students to continue to study it. The issues facing natural hazard management are very complex and interdisciplinary, and we need the best people to train in the Earth Sciences to make an impact and change for the future.”
As well as having the opportunity to hear from a leading research expert, Brock’s Geoscience Day also enabled students from local schools to try out various geoscience-related activities and hear from industry experts about the range of exciting careers available within the field.
Current second year student and Geology student Emily Gola was a student ambassador during the day. She said: “It is important to show school pupils the importance of what we do as geologists and to encourage an interest in the subject; I’ve really enjoyed talking about what they could learn if they study geology at A level.”
Holly Dibben, an ex-Brock student now studying Applied Geology at Plymouth University, also attended the event to provide advice to current students about making the transition from College to University, and what it is like to study a Geoscience at degree level. She said: “There is potential for geologists to earn sizable salaries, and travel and work abroad, so it really is a rewarding career path. Although there is a stereotype that Geology is a more ‘masculine’ science, many of the leading employers are now looking to encourage equal numbers, so there is particular opportunity for girls over the next few years to progress in the industry.”

Brockenhurst College and Solent University help launch Childrenâs University
A branch of the Children’s University is coming to Southampton and the New Forest thanks to a partnership between Brockenhurst College, Southampton Solent University, and local schools Hounsdown School and Blackfield Primary & Fawley Infant Federated Schools.
The Children’s University (CU) is a nationwide programme that aims to engage, inspire, and motivate children from disadvantaged backgrounds or those from families who might otherwise not think of further or higher education as an option.
In partnership with local schools, who join up voluntarily, the CU encourages children aged from 7 to 14 years (and 5 and 6 year olds with their families) to develop a passion for learning by offering them an exciting range of extra-curricular activities and events. These range from after-school or holiday activities offered on school sites to visits to museums, businesses, exhibitions, sports activities and university lectures.
After completing 30, 65 or 100 hours of activity they then achieve bronze, silver or gold certificates, with CU postgraduate and doctorate levels awarded above these hours.
All children taking part in the scheme attend an annual graduation ceremony, complete with mortar boards and gowns, where family and friends can celebrate their success.
Di Roberts, Principal of Brockenhurst College said the partnership will respond to the needs of the local community in the New Forest and Southampton.
“We look forward to providing the opportunity for children and young people to enrich their educational experience and become proud and confident learners,” she said.
As well as benefiting local children, current Solent University and Brockenhurst College students will gain valuable work experience through helping to run CU-accredited activities such as sports sessions, taster days, filming and music workshops, engineering exploration days and CU graduation ceremonies.
“The Children’s University will help us to engage with younger children in addition to providing our students with rewarding opportunities for work experience,” says Southampton Solent University’s Partnerships Development Manager Jamie Mackay.

Brockenhurst Collegeâs Retail Skills Shop receives national award as part of Adult Learners Week
Brockenhurst College’s Retail Skills Shop is celebrating after being selected as an NIACE Adult Learners’ Week South East Learning Project Award winner.
The Award is in recognition of the Retail Skills Shop’s provision of high quality retail training to unemployed adults in Hampshire, in order to prepare them for employment in the sector.
The project, set up in April 2011 as a partnership between Brockenhurst College, Southampton City Council, Job Centre Plus and The National Skills Academy for Retail, aims to tackle growing employment levels and the need for trained retail staff. Working with local retailers and major recruiters to ensure adults are trained to the standards they require, the Retail Skills Shop also delivers bespoke training packages to meet retailers’ specific recruitment needs.
1278 learners have trained with the Retail Skills Shop over the past two years, with 40% securing employment as a direct result and many others being inspired to progress with further training.
Emma Barratt, the Skills Shop’s Development Manager said: “The high-success rate of the initiative attracts a range of learners who would otherwise be reluctant to return to learning. We ran a recent training programme with a local General Hospital and recruited all the learners who applied, including a significant number of older applicants who have previously struggled to find employment.”
The Brockenhurst team will be presented with the Award on 21st May during a ceremony at the Museum of London, which will mark this year’s Adult Learners’ Week. Held each May, Adult Learners’ Week is an annual National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) campaign which encourages thousands of adults to give learning a go, whether for pleasure, to catch up on skills missed out at school or for career advancement.
Brockenhurst College Principal, Di Roberts said: “To receive recognition for the hard work undertaken by all partners involved in the Retail Skills Shop’s success is a wonderful achievement. Training schemes such as this make a real difference to individuals, the local community and businesses, and Adult Learners’ Week is a great opportunity for this to be recognised and used to inspire others as to the benefits of lifelong learning.”
