Brock student triumphs against the odds

The success of Melanie Edwards from New Milton and over 104 FE students who have been helped by the Helena Kennedy Foundation to overcome a variety of obstacles was celebrated at the House of Lords on Tuesday 4 March 2014.

The House of Lords celebration brought together students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have progressed from FE colleges from as far afield as Hull into higher education. The event was supported by exam board OCR.

Melanie Edwards attended Brockenhurst College and is now studying Adult Nursing at the University of Southampton, having successfully overcome severe anxiety in order to achieve her success.

Each student selected by the Helena Kennedy Foundation received a bursary of £1500 to help cover the costs of university study, as well as on-going guidance and training from the Foundation.

The Helena Kennedy Foundation was set up in Baroness Kennedy’s name over 15 years ago to take forward the findings of her seminal ‘Learning Works’ report. Speaking at the event, Baroness Kennedy said: “Our Bursary holders are truly inspirational people and it is an honour to witness and support their rise to success. I am delighted to have presented these students with one of our awards in acknowledgment of their achievements. Life is all about learning new things; each awarded student has shown fortitude and determination in taking the next step in their life”

Mark Dawe, Chief Executive of OCR, commented: “It is a privilege to be able to celebrate the achievements of some quite remarkable young people today. They are inspirational and great ambassadors for the potential of the FE sector. The Foundation removes some of the key barriers for students, who, without the Foundation’s assistance, would struggle to progress.”

Dr Ann Limb, Founder of the Foundation in 1998, and Chair of Trustees, said: “We know there are so many talented people out there who have the ability to succeed in higher education but still miss out on the opportunity. Making the leap from college to university can be a big step and our Foundation works with colleges across the UK to support students to overcome real disadvantage.  We are determined to continue to invest in talent, reward hard work and believe in the potential of education to transform lives”.

Brock scoops Craft Guild of Chefs President’s Trophy

Brockenhurst College has been awarded the Craft Guild of Chefs President’s Trophy, an accolade which recognises its strong support of the Craft Guild, the UK’s leading Chefs association with members worldwide.

Cathy MacArthur and Allan Davison-Collier from the College’s Catering and Hospitality department collected the trophy at The Craft Guild of Chefs’ Annual General Meeting on Sunday at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington, London. The award was presented by the honorary president of the Craft Guild of Chefs, Vice Admiral Anthony Johnstone-Burt who is Master of the Royal Household.

This is the first time the President’s Trophy has been awarded to a college, highlighting the highly professional and commercially astute nature of the catering and hospitality provision at Brock. The department has also been pivotal in supporting the successful continuation of the Wessex Salon Culinaire, which has been hosted at Brock for the past 3 years. This year’s event will be  held on 28th & 29th May, and will be even bigger than previous years with the addition of the ‘Wessex Bake Off’.

Lecturer in Food & Beverage Operation Cathy MacArthur said“It is an honour to receive such an award from the Craft Guild of Chefs, an organisation who share the same ultimate objective as we do in developing young talent for our industry.”

Celebrating science at Brock

Science students at Brock have been praised for their Extended Research Projects today with an award presentation and inspirational talk from a commercial scientist.

Extended Research Projects are undertaken by high-achieving students keen to progress to science-related degrees or professions. They are free to choose their topic, provided it is related to their academic study, and conduct individual research to investigate an area of specific interest.

Three students in particular were identified as having produced outstanding Extended Projects; Daniel Butler won a Bronze award for his investigation of the ways in which antibiotic resistance is challenging the NHS, and Jenna Crosbie scooped Silver for her analysis of the question, ‘Should more people be taking statins?’. The top Gold prize was awarded to Claudia Lever for her project entitled, ‘Should water supplies in the UK be fluorinated?’ The judging panel commended the attention to detail and originality of thought exhibited in her beautifully written assignment.

Claudia said: “I am delighted to receive this award – completing an Extended Research Project is hard work but very rewarding. I am hoping to go on to study Dentistry at university, so the focus of my project is directly related to my future plans. It has also helped me to develop my research technique and time management, which are essential skills for university and the workplace.”

The awards were sponsored by GEO Speciality Chemicals, with Operations Director Martin Symons presenting the prizes. He said:  “It is today’s students who will be the ones contributing to the evolution of technology to meet future global challenges; I encourage them to be curious and inquisitive in order to push the boundaries and develop their scientific careers.”

Di Roberts, Principal of the College joined the event and said: “These students will be at the forefront of moving science forward, and part of new disciplines that do not even exist yet. The amount of work that goes into completing an Extended Research Project is phenomenal and really assists students in developing the skills that are highly sought-after by top universities.”

The presentation was followed with a talk from Adam Barter, a Development Chemist at GEO responsible for bringing new products to the market. He described his career journey from completing an BSc and Masters in Chemistry at university, to securing his current position as a scientist two years ago. Adam emphasised how his career in science has provided him with invaluable opportunities to pursue new technologies, travel abroad and continuously learn through sector conferences and training.

Students attending the event also had the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in class to a fast-paced quiz, where they worked in teams to tackle biology, chemistry, physics and maths-related questions, submitting their answers using interactive learning technology.

Brockenhurst College students set the international standard for A level Performance Studies when they showcased their work to the OCR Examining Board last weekend.

The student-devised performances were judged by 30 examiners over a three day period. Their work was filmed and footage sent to centres taking the OCR Performance Studies course across the UK, Jersey, Gibraltar and Singapore, to be used as a guide to marking.

Performance Studies student Bella Kane said: “Although the rehearsals were quite pressurised and I was nervous about the performance, it’s worthwhile knowing that we have set the standard for the whole country.”

Head of Performing Arts and Senior Examiner at Brock Tara Gadd commented: “This is a very prestigious event for the college to be involved in. Examiners from all over the country have attended the meeting and as one of the largest and most successful centres in the UK, we really did put on an excellent demonstration of practical work. The students have worked extremely hard throughout rehearsals and we are all very proud of them.”

Hampshire Police visited Brockenhurst College last week to give students a taste of what it takes to become a police officer.

The mock assessment day at the College put Uniformed Public Services students through their paces on a number of different tests, including the completion of mock interviews where they undertook a written paper, a ‘situation judgement test’ and a question and answer session with the Hampshire Constabulary’s Recruitment Manager, Valerie King. She said: “The mock interviews give an insight into what the recruitment selection practices are within the police, but are also a useful experience to have no matter what kind of career students want to go on to.”

The afternoon session consisted of talks and practical demonstrations from officers in the Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Firearms unit, the Force Support Unit and the Dog Handling Unit, showing students the diversity of roles available within the police. Lisa Hillman, Public Services Lecturer and College Commanding Officer worked closely with Sgt Jason Eastwood to arrange the event this year, and said: “Having the assessment centre here enables the students to gain an understanding as to what is available within the police service. All-Ways Healthy at Brock

Brockenhurst College has been promoting the benefits of healthy living amongst students and staff with its All-Ways Healthy campaign and a series of awareness-raising events and activities.

Representatives from a variety of health related-organisations including NHS Services, Health Watch, the Teenage Cancer Trust, BEAT, the Centre for Dentistry and Safe Partnership attended the College to help students find out more about a range of issues including healthy eating, mental health, the importance of exercise and safe relationships.

Student Lauren Chambers said she found the activities a valuable way of learning more about adopting a healthy lifestyle: “I have had the opportunity to attend workshops and listen to talks about issues that I did not know very much about before. It is really important to be aware of these sorts of things, especially as we become more independent as adults – taking responsibility for maintaining a healthy lifestyle is really down to us.”

Health & Safety Partner Andrea Kennedy organised the event and said: “We have a duty to support our students in making the best choices possible when it comes to their own health – if an activity such as this can help them to make at least one positive lifestyle decision, it has been well worth it.”

Head of Performing Arts Tara Gadd was also supporting the All-Ways Healthy week as she prepares for a 100k charity bike ride as part of Women v Cancer. She said: “In training for this event I have really embraced a more healthy lifestyle which has had many positive effects; I think that the All-Ways Healthy campaign at Brock is an excellent initiative to help educate students as to the various ways in which they can make a difference to their physical and mental wellbeing.”

Rob Forkan strikes Gold thanks to Brockenhurst College

Brockenhurst College was celebrating today as Rob Forkan, entrepreneur and founder of Gandy’s Flip-flops and one of its former students, was awarded a prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Gold Award by Lord Willis of Knaresborough at the House of Commons.

Staff and students from Brockenhurst College were present at the awards ceremony which is held each year to celebrate the success of further education alumni as well as acknowledge the vital role that colleges play in the careers of the winners and of their continuing achievements.

Rob was nominated by the College where he studied for a BTEC in Sport and a GCSE in English between 2003 and 2004.

Since leaving the college in 2004, Rob, alongside his brother Paul, spent years travelling the world before creating the social enterprise and footwear brand, Gandys.

Wanting to start something sustainable that would help support orphans and other disadvantaged children after the tragic loss of their own parents in the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, Rob and his brother started Gandys in 2012 from their bedroom in Brixton.

Though still in its early stages, Gandys is fast solidifying itself not only as a stylish and socially conscious footwear brand, but also as a real force for good with their ‘Orphans for Orphans’ fund, which benefits from receiving 10% of Gandys’ profits to build children’s homes around the world.

Rob continues to have a strong relationship with Brockenhurst College, visiting it last year on its annual Progression Day to speak to students about the journey he has been on in establishing his brand.

On winning his award Rob Forkan said: “Many thanks for this award; I am very humbled to receive it.  My time spent at Brockenhurst College was very valuable and exposed me to a wide range of programmes and studies that not only broadened my skills and my knowledge base, but also taught me the value of discipline and hard work and how integral to success they are.  Brockenhurst College provided me with a solid foundation from which I have been able to build upon, and that has made all the difference.”

Rob was among eight former students whose careers have been positively influenced by their former Colleges.  The other winners are Gloria de Piero MP – Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities, Anton Piotrowski – Chef and winner of Masterchef the Professionals 2012, Martin Brundle – Formula One driver and TV presenter/commentator, Toni Pearce – President of the National Union of Students, Alan Rusbridger – Editor of The Guardian, Christopher Bailey MBE – CEO and Chief Creative Officer of Burberry and Dr Munira Mirza – London Deputy Mayor for Culture and Education.

To highlight the important role further education continues to play for today’s students, a ‘future star’ campaign is run alongside the Gold Awards. The nominating colleges each select a current student who shows promise in a similar field to their Gold Award winner.

Hameed Al Khawaja is currently studying at Brockenhurst College, and on completion hopes to study Business and Accounting at Exeter University. Hameed’s aim is to work as an accountant and eventually to set up his own business.

Hameed had the opportunity to meet his muse at the award ceremony at the House of Commons on 11 June and find out what it takes to carve out a successful career and about the role that their college played in their success.

Hameed said: “Rob’s progression from student at Brockenhurst College to entrepreneur has greatly inspired me to fulfil my own aspirations and similarly strive to set up my own business.”

Brockenhurst College Principal Di Roberts attended the event and said: “It is a pleasure to see the success of both a current and former Brock student highlighted at this prestigious event; I am delighted that Rob has received this award in celebration of his incredible business success, but also as recognition of the dedication he shows in giving back to, and improving the lives of other young people. As a ‘Future Star’, I am confident that Hameed will use his evident ability, ambition and commitment to embark upon a similarly fruitful and rewarding future.”

Brockenhurst College students mark First World War centenary, in the College’s own centenary year

Continuing its centenary celebrations, Brockenhurst College students performed to an audience of alumni and parents in an exclusive preview of a performance entitled ‘Brock in WW1’ this week.

The College had received £7,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to support the development of the drama project which saw students researching the stories of local residents affected by the First World War, and then bringing their experiences to life through theatre.

Awarded through the HLF’s ‘First World War: then and now’ programme, which marks the Centenary of the First World War, the project enabled students and local people in Brockenhurst to come together to preserve the memories and heritage of those who lived through the world-changing conflict.

The activity was particularly poignant as the First World War’s centenary coincides with the College’s own 100th anniversary year, with many past students of the time having been affected by the war.

Students have been collecting photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, letters and keepsakes, as well as family tales passed down, to help them build a clear picture of what life was like in the area 100 years ago, and used these findings to inspire and develop the theatrical performance.

First year student Summer Stringfellow took part in the project and said: “This has been an eye opening experience as my peers and I have learnt so much about the First World War, from censorship in letters to the angel of mons legend. It has been amazing to have uncovered so many facts and accounts from the local community and be able to teach others what we have learnt through the use of performing arts.”

Having been previewed at the College on 20th June at a 'Brock 100' celebratory event, the 'Brock in WW1' performance will now be delivered to local school groups to share experiences and raise awareness of the conflict.

Principal Di Roberts comments: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the opportunity to engage with local schools. This is an extremely rewarding and enriching project for our students to be undertaking – it is essential that the memories of those who lived through such a world-changing period of time are understood and preserved. This has been a unique chance for young people to connect with this legacy, and use it creatively to inform their studies and broaden their understanding of how it has shaped our modern world.”

Brockenhurst College tutor is granted Confucius Institute Excellence Award

Brockenhurst College lecturer and tutor, Xing Li, has been granted a Confucius Institute Excellence Award by The Institute of Education, University of London. Xing has been recognised and celebrated by the Excellence Awards, based upon her great contribution to the study of Chinese language and China itself within Brockenhurst College.

Mrs Xing Li Bloodworth, Confucius Classroom Manager, has been teaching Chinese and promoting Chinese culture at the College since 2005.  She has established a complete Chinese curriculum, and has also developed Enrichment and adult Chinese courses. Xing encourages Chinese culture to be celebrated by all Brock College students, by organising annual Chinese New Year Celebrations with series of activities on campus and an annual London trip, open to all College students.  Brock students have also been able to enjoy the Chinese school links set up by Xing, enabling them to participate in regular cultural exchanges to China and life changing gap year work opportunities.

In 2010, Brockenhurst College was awarded the ‘Confucius Classroom’ title, and remains the only FE College to be given the title. With Xing’s effort and dedication, Brockenhurst College and its Chinese partner schools have developed programmes such as A-level in-country delivery, teacher training and summer camps, developed the College’s Internationalisation Strategy, and are currently developing a second International programme for another sister school in Guangdong province. With all the success of Chinese learning, development in curriculum and the work the College has done with China in the recent years, Brockenhurst College has been recognised by Prime Minister David Cameron, and the College Principal Di Roberts was invited to accompany him on his recent visit to China.

Speaking about receiving her award, Xing said: “A very big thanks to Brockenhurst College, who have given me this opportunity and great honour to share my passion in promoting Chinese language and culture learning with British Students. I am so proud to see them inspired by Chinese learning in their studies and employment opportunities.”

As Confucius Classroom, the College has the resource and staff to organise one-day Chinese cultural events and deliver regular after-school clubs on Chinese culture and Chinese language learning to local schools and their pupils. All these activities are free. If you and your school are interested, please contact Xing via email xli@brock.ac.uk .

Children's graduation day triples in size at learning celebration event

This year's Children’s University graduation ceremony, hosted by Southampton Solent University, has tripled in size since it was launched last year.

At the weekend, 134 pupils from 12 schools across the region donned caps and gowns to take part in the Hampshire Children’s University graduation event - which is a collaboration between Brockenhurst College, Solent University and local schools.

The Children’s University (CU) is a nationwide programme that aims to engage, inspire, and motivate children aged from 7 to 14 years and 5 and 6 year olds with their families, to develop a passion for learning by offering them an exciting range of extra-curricular activities and events - from after-school activities on site, to visits to museums, businesses, exhibitions, sports activities and university lectures.

This innovative initiative aims to raise aspirations and inspire a love of learning for children from all backgrounds and abilities. It is also used to support children from disadvantaged backgrounds or those from families who might otherwise not think of further or higher education as an option.

Commenting on the success of the scheme Di Roberts, Principal of Brockenhurst College, said: “I am delighted that the Children’s University is providing the opportunity for children and young people to enrich their educational experience and become proud and confident learners.”

Dr Jamie Mackay, Partnership Development Manager at Southampton Solent University added: “The fact that this event has grown since last year is a testament to the success of the programme and shows why it’s important to reach out to people from different backgrounds.”

The schools taking part included:

·         St. Michael and All Angels CofE Infant School

·         Netley March CofE Infant School

·         Copythorne CofE Infant School

·         Bartley Junior School

·         Foxhills Infant School

·         Blackfield Primary School

·         Fawley Infant School

·         Hounsdown Secondary School

·         Hordle CofE Primary School

·         Oaklodge Specialist Art College

·         The New Forest Academy.

The graduates received a certificate from the local Children’s University Chancellor and Paralympics 2012 wheelchair rugby star, Aaron Phipps.

After completing a set number of hours of activity the pupils achieve different awards. Since September, some of the pupils have now completed over 200 hours of learning.

Fiona Adams, Headteacher at Hordle Primary School said: “We have over 25 clubs each term for our children to take part in and over 60% of our children participate. They love their out-of-hours learning and 260 club places are filled each week. Children's University is an inspiring programme and over 100 of our pupils have signed up for a passport. We are thrilled that we have 35 children graduating; that's a whopping 10% of our school in this first cohort. We are proud to be associated with the Children's University and hope that our children's aspirations for the future will be raised by this fantastic experience.”

Progression Day helps students consider their next steps after College

What can I do after College? What do I need to do to get there? These were just some of the questions posed by students as Brockenhurst College hosted a series of events throughout its annual Progression Day.

Leaving College and deciding on the next step to take can be a daunting experience, so the event was designed to inspire and inform current students as to the vast range of options available to them, and to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Representatives from major employers including JP Morgan and IBM were on hand to offer support and guidance to those deliberating which career path to take, and to give advice about the world of work, tips for CV writing and interview techniques.

For students thinking of going to University, there was practical advice available on a range of topics, from the UCAS application process, to subject–specific workshops from maths to songwriting, run by universities from all over the South, providing an insight into studying at degree level.

The keynote speech was delivered by Chris Willrich, a former Brock student who studied BTEC Engineering at the College in 2006. Chris progressed from Brockenhurst College to become a Project Manager at audio visual installation company, DJW.

Chris ran several sessions at Brock’s Progression Day entitled, ‘Life is not a dress rehearsal’, where he spoke to students about the journey he has been on in establishing his career with DJW, which was attended by hundreds of students. Chris’s overarching message to them as they consider their next steps after College was: “Every day is a school day, even once you’ve left education and have embarked on working life, you should continue to learn from others around you and those who inspire you within your chosen industry.”

Brock student, Daisy Webb said: “Progression day has been really great, I came into College this morning unsure of what I wanted to study at university and where. Now having attended some of today’s sessions, I know that I want to study Illustration at Southampton Solent, and I have a clear understanding of what I need to do in order to achieve that goal.”

Brock College student receives Amazing People Awards nomination

Business Student Dansan Wickneswaran attended the Solent Education Business Partnership Amazing People Awards at the Novotel Southampton last week, where he was nominated for an award within the ‘Making the Most of Work Experience’ category. There were 13 award categories for students and local businesses.

The awards celebrate young people’s preparation for adult life and work, and Dansan was recognised for his performance on work placement in the Business Development Department at the College.

A video clip of Dansan speaking about his experience was shown at the awards ceremony; he said: “Undertaking my work placement in the Business Development Office opened my eyes to the working world and made me think about how I could develop my career.  Following my placement I worked even harder on my coursework to achieve higher grades and was accepted onto a Degree in Retail Management course at Bournemouth University.”

Art and Photomedia students put visitors in the picture about their talents in end of term exhibition

Brockenhurst College’s up-and-coming artists, designers and media stars showcased their innovative and inspiring work at the ever-popular end of year Visual Arts and Photomedia Show this week.

The three-day exhibition was a celebration of students’ hard work and commitment throughout their A level and vocational Sixth Form courses. It featured a diverse range of art, including fine art, 3D, textiles, photography and new media. The Visual Art and Photomedia departments have an excellent reputation for developing young talent, and have been consistently graded ‘outstanding’ in Ofsted inspections.

George Popesco, Head of Art at the College said: “The show offers members of the local community the chance to come on to campus and enjoy the outstanding quality of work that is produced here at Brock. The students are making the most of this opportunity to get their work seen before many of them go on to study at some of the country’s top universities.”
