Last week, Brock students took part in the national initiative, ‘Biology Week’, a celebration of all aspects of the Biosciences for everyone from children to professional scientists to get involved with. Brock students took part for the entirety of the week, with a different Biology-related activity each day.

The week commenced with a trip to the Darwin Studio at the Natural History Museum, which featured an interactive film narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The remainder of the week consisted of talks from Marine Biologist Fran James and Neuroscientist Dr Asuni from the University of Southampton, a hands-on ‘edible cell’ competition, and a 5* documentary featuring Sir David Attenborough.

Rachel Taylor-Hamilton, Biology teacher at Brock and fellow of the Society of Biology said: ‘The students had great fun entering the ‘edible cell competition’, where they created a realistic model of a plant or animal cell using only edible ingredients, such as sandwiches and jellies, cookies and cakes. The winners were Keira Starkey and Chineza van der Vos who each won popular science books, pens and a coveted ‘I love Biology’ badge! Biology week is a fantastic opportunity to enhance the students’ learning and enthusiasm for the subject whilst having fun at the same time.”
